When venturing through the archways of the gatehouse to the inner ward, you will find the magnificent courtyard adjacent to the impressive great hall which is now used for various functions.

You can even visit the tower where you can walk along the replica fighting platform  if you dare. It may be hard to believe but the castle was in ruins by the early sixteenth century. This can be witnessed by viewing the Outer West Gatehouse; part of the castle that has not had any restoration work. John Crichton Stuart the fourth Marquess of Bute was mostly responsible for the reconstruction of the castle between 1928 and 1939.
