Welcome to Caerphilly castle or ‘Giant Caerphilly’ as it was once referred to by a 14th century poet. The castle is the 2nd biggest surviving medieval fortresses in Europe, covering 30 acres and second only to Windsor Castle. Sources show that Gilbert de clare started building it in April 1268.

As you approach the castle the first thing that will strike you it’s tremendous size. The two magnificent towers, the vast walls and water defences, which once would have been crossed by drawbridge. Now, a modern fixed bridge entices you across the moat leading to the entrance.
