When you walk into the impressive fourteenth-century great hall, you will straight away notice the wooden beams and stone floors which gives you a great feel for the events that would have been held at the time, it is also fully equipped with modern catering facilities and is available for events including civil ceremonies (It is not available solely for the ceremony.).

When the castle was taken by State care in 1950 it again has some work to complete as there were floods from the lakes this included glazing of the windows of the Great Hall, aided by private donors in 1960. They have recently added an ‘interpretive fireplace’ in the Great Hall, which is very realistic. The magnificent great hall and state apartments are on the south side of the inner ward.
