As you venture through the magnificent archway that leads to the 13th century North dam, it almost feels as though you are leaving the castle grounds and entering the area once thought to be the kings stables. As you continue across the path you are presented with the tranquility of the impressive lake built to protect the castle grounds. The lake would have originally been defended by the North gatehouse, which today stands as ruins. Looking from outside the grounds the medieval fortress is mirrored by the lake giving it an even grander reflection.
