When you cross the 2nd modern bridge you are presented with two of the most well known features of the castle. You will see the next gatehouses which lead you to the inner wards. You can visit the top of the gatehouse to see the impressive views of the castle and a beautiful view of Caerphilly and beyond. Once again you can’t help but notice the famous leaning tower, the reason of which is unknown. It is said that the tower was blown up during the latter half of the 18th century by Oliver Cromwell’s forces so that it could not be used against them. However it is more likely to be a result of subsidence. The attack was believed to be in 1318 during the civil war and the castle would have been fired upon by a cannon from nearby surrounding hills. You will notice the next gatehouses which lead you to the inner wards and the top of the gatehouse giving you an impressive view of the castle, Caerphilly and beyond.
